Drawing on the evidence, theory and the experience of 25 international scholars (women and men) from a wide range of disciplines as well as her 30-year academic career, Professor Watson looks at the behaviours and activities that contribute to success in academia in general, and more specifically those that are of specific importance and relevance to women.

Irrespective of country or discipline, women in academia typically are less likely to publish or to be cited, funded or promoted, than their male colleagues. This is not due to women being ineffective or less able; it results from institutional and societal factors that create and perpetuate substantial gender asymmetry in this sector.
Women In Academia is a self-help book the purpose of which is primarily to promote awareness of women in academia to engage with behaviours and activities that contribute to successful academic careers. It is also relevant to individuals and organisations for whom women in academia matters. Tangible lessons in career development are presented using a variety of methods including case studies to provide insight and provoke action, as well as ‘additional resources’ and ‘over to you’ sections that support a workbook approach of 'how to do academia'.

About the author
Margaret is Professor of Health Services Research and Pharmacy Practice in the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Strathclyde, Scotland. She is also an Honorary Professor with the University of Bath.
Her academic career spans 30 years and has focussed upon the safe and effective use of medicines and effective professional practice. Her research includes the synthesis of evidence and its implementation into practice, policy and education. She is the recipient of Fellowships from the Medical Research Council, Leverhulme Foundation and Health Foundation.
Margaret has served on a range of national research funding committees, has over 110 peer reviewed publications, her research income exceeds £3 million, and she is a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. In 2019, she established her own consultancy business, Watson Research and Training Limited. She is a qualified coach and mentor and delivers a range of services that add value to research and individuals involved in research and healthcare.
Her current academic activities include:
- Developing evidence-based solution to support medicines management of vulnerable patient populations, particularly older people with sensory impairment (visual and/or hearing)
- Inter-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder involvement in research
- Increasing capacity and capability in HSR
