At the University of Bath, we are a community built on respect, inclusion, and belonging, where every individual, regardless of their background, identity, or beliefs, should feel safe, supported, and valued.

Racial discrimination, whether experienced directly or indirectly, can have a profound and lasting impact on an individual’s sense of safety and wellbeing. Such experiences affect not only those directly targeted but also the wider community, eroding our collective sense of belonging.

We are proud that Bath is recognised as the second safest university town or city in England and Wales by the 2025 Complete University Guide, but we know that statistics alone cannot capture the full human experience of feeling safe.

The University is committed to taking meaningful action to prevent and respond to all forms of racism, discrimination, and hate. We participate in the Race Equality Charter, a national scheme with the aim to inspire a strategic approach to making cultural and systematic changes that will make a real difference to minority ethnic staff and students.

We encourage students, whether personally affected by discrimination or simply looking for support, to engage with our dedicated support services and networks:

  • Our Student Support and Wellbeing Service, to speak to an Advisor on weekdays from 9am-5pm at the 4 West Roper Centre, with no appointment necessary, or by emailing studentsupport@bath.ac.uk. 
  • Our Support and Report tool provides a mechanism for both students and staff to tell us about any harassment or discrimination that they might experience on and off campus. This allows for reporting on behalf of someone else and also anonymous reporting.
  • Our “Be Well - Talk Now” service, which provides free, confidential advice and support by phone from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.   • Help is also available from The SU’s Advice and Support Centre and The Independent Advisors for PGR students (for PGR students only). 
  • Our SafeZone app enables you to immediately contact Security and notify them of your location and receive notifications in an emergency situation. We encourage all members of our community to download SafeZone to their mobile phones.
  • The Chaplaincy staff are available to talk with anyone who has been affected, in total confidence. You can email chaplaincy@bath.ac.uk, or Ian Spence our Coordinating Faith Leader.
