Archiving and disposal
Proper archiving and deletion of data are essential to maintaining a secure and compliant data environment. The University of Bath Records Management Policy underpins the creation, maintenance and disposal of institutional records that are necessary, accurate and fit for purpose. It aims to ensure that all University records are managed effectively to enhance efficiency, support business continuity, and demonstrate compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
Use the University Records Retention Schedule to determine how long to keep different types of information and when it should be archived or securely disposed of. This applies to both digital and hardcopy formats. The Information Classification Scheme provides specific guidance on disposing of highly restricted and restricted data. Adhering to these protocols ensures safe and responsible data management, minimises risks, and supports compliance with University policies. If you think your information may have historical value beyond its immediate operational purpose consult the University Archivist.
When it is time to get rid of data and information, do so in a secure way; shred papers, and delete digital items by sending them to the Bin and regularly emptying it.
