Typically, commuting accounts for around 3% of the University’s carbon footprint. Travelling to campus by more sustainable methods could make a big difference to our environmental impact; it will reduce our carbon emissions as well as improve local air quality and reduce pollution.
Active travel
We know that active travel to campus may not be possible or realistic for everyone. However, we encourage those who are able, to try changing your commute to travel by foot, bike or scooter.
As well as reducing your carbon footprint, active travel can:
- boost your wellbeing
- increase your fitness
- save you money
Cycling and scooting
There are lots of initiatives to help you cycle to campus. These include:
- the cycle to work salary sacrifice scheme for staff to support you to purchase a bike
- the electric cycle trial hire scheme for staff and postgraduate students
- e-scooters and e-bikes for hire from Bath city centre
- The Bicycle Users Group – a community of staff and student cyclists
- The Cycling Club – a friendly student group for all types of riders

Walking
Walking to and from campus is another great option to commute sustainably and improve your fitness.
If the walk up the hill to campus is too hard, just walking downhill at the end of your day can make a big difference. It can also be a good way to destress and see the beautiful views over Bath city centre.
You can use the City of Bath Walking Network map to plan your route.

Driving to campus
Driving to campus may be the only option for some members of our community.
Car sharing
If you need to travel by car, you could reduce the carbon footprint of your journey by sharing a lift with others going the same way.
You can also benefit from purchasing a Car Share permit to split the costs of parking and to have access to car parking spaces prioritised for car sharers.
Electric vehicle scheme
Through our Electric Vehicle (EV) scheme you can make savings on your tax and national insurance when purchasing an electric car.
Find out how to decide if an electric vehicle is the most sustainable travel choice for you.
Reduce your commute
Through our Flexible Working Policy, staff and postgraduate students can apply for part-time working, flexitime, remote working, job sharing, term-time only working, and annualised hours.
If you're eligible for any of these initiatives and they work for you, you could reduce the number of times you travel to campus, and therefore reduce your carbon emissions.
