Hosting an intern

Find out more about how internships work and how we can support you with connecting your opportunities to our students.

Internships are short-term work experiences that benefit both students and employers.

Internships are open to all students and are not part of a degree.

How we can promote your internships

You can post your internship opportunities on our Recruit@Bath portal free of charge. We are happy to advertise internships for any year group or subject. We just ask that you specify any preferred year or discipline in your listing. Internships must comply with National Minimum Wage legislation for us to advertise them.

We also offer additional services for employers including events, fairs and target emails. Find out more

Internship pay

We expect internships to at least comply with National Minimum Wage legislation. Many employers offer higher rates to attract top talent

Paying interns fairly:

  • widens access to opportunities
  • increases the talent pool
  • boosts motivation and productivity

Structuring an effective internship

To maximise the internship experience:

  • provide diverse, challenging responsibilities
  • assign productive tasks that contribute to your business
  • leverage interns' fresh perspectives and skills
  • offer mentorship throughout the internship
  • conduct an 'exit' meeting for feedback and reflection

Remember that interns want to learn and contribute meaningfully to your organisation.

Internships and placements

At Bath, lots of our students do a placement as part of their course. These are different to internships.

Placements

  • Year-long, typically in 3rd or penultimate year
  • Part of the degree, coordinated by University faculties
  • Credit-bearing and assessed

Internships

  • Shorter duration, flexible timing
  • Not coordinated by the University
  • Open to all students and recent graduates

Micro Internships

  • Short-term ranging for 1-5 days
  • May be paid or unpaid
  • Not credit bearing
  • Can take place year round
  • Either remote/hybrid/in-person options

Note: While students on placement years may not be available for summer internships, many Bath students (up to a third) do not take placement years and are available for internships.
