Sustainability Advocates take the next step beyond the curriculum to develop the skills, confidence, and experience needed to create positive change.

Building on the knowledge gained as a Sustainability Citizen, you'll engage with opportunities across the University, tackle real-world sustainability challenges, collaborate with others, and inspire action within your communities.

During its pilot year, the SPARK Award is offering the Advocate level only to students on participating programmes. Wider rollout is planned for 2027/28.

Sign up to the Advocate level and start turning your sustainability learning into action. By registering, you'll be signposted to opportunities across Bath to build your experience and create positive change.

Sign up to be a Sustainability Advocate by Monday 1 February 2027.

Take action

To achieve Sustainability Advocate status, you must:

• attend a Sustainability Advocate Facilitation Skills Workshop
• complete at least 12 hours of sustainability advocacy activities – you can complete the hours through one activity or a combination of activities
• write a short reflection on your experience

Your sustainability advocacy activities should help spark positive change through action, whether that's engaging others with sustainability, working collaboratively on a project, or contributing to sustainability initiatives in your community.

Activities could include:

• co-leading a sustainability workshop, such as a Carbon Literacy course
• leading or supporting sustainability initiatives through a society or sports club
• taking part in volunteering opportunities – check out the SU’s V Team
• participating in an interdisciplinary project, such as a Vertically Integrated Project
• championing sustainability within your community

Becoming a Sustainability Advocate is flexible and designed around your interests and skills. There are many ways to get involved and make an impact at Bath. Explore the student sustainability webpages for a full range of opportunities.

Attending events or training does not count as an advocacy activity. Your evidence should demonstrate action, engagement or contribution beyond participation. If you're unsure whether an activity is suitable for the Advocate level, get in touch with the Sustainability team for guidance.

Submit your award

Once you have completed the Advocate requirements, submit your evidence using the short reflective form by Monday 17 May 2027.

If you are completing the Bath Award sustainability capability, you can use your Bath Award certificate as evidence towards the Advocate level, helping you connect your achievements across both pathways.

Successful completion of the requirements will earn you recognition as a Sustainability Advocate and enable you to take the next step on your sustainability journey towards a Sustainability Leader, developing advanced leadership skills and leading larger-scale sustainability initiatives.

Be recognised for your achievements

As a Sustainability Advocate, you will receive a certificate and digital badge that you can share on LinkedIn, your CV, and with future employers. These provide recognition of the skills, knowledge, and experience you have developed through the SPARK Award.

You'll also be invited to a celebration event with other Sustainability Advocates and Leaders, recognising your contribution to creating positive change at Bath.
