Manage your waste with the least environmental impact as possible.

Reducing and reusing equipment and consumables is vital in reducing the environmental impact of research. When waste is produced, efforts should be made to ensure that it is not sent to landfill, and is reused and recycled where possible.

Recycling and waste disposal on campus

Much of the waste produced from research and related office activities can be recycled on campus. The University has guidance on waste and recycling general practice:

Personal and environmental safety

You must prioritise your personal and environmental safety when managing your research waste. To ensure waste is properly managed both internally and externally, the University participates in duty of care audits.

Lab-specific waste management

Poor lab waste management practices and cross-contamination can cause:

  • substantial increase in carbon emissions and environmental impacts
  • increased costs for the University
  • significant health and safety risks
