We are able to offer a variety of analytical services to other Departments within the University of Bath and businesses outside the University.
For further information on availability and costs, please do not hesitate to contact Anneke Lubben or John Lowe by email or phone.
X-ray powder diffraction
- Identification/fingerprinting of crystalline materials (e.g. asbestos dust).
Single crystal X-ray diffraction
- Full structural characterisation from a crystalline sample of material (i.e. shape of molecule, content of molecule, all geometric data, how molecules pack together, intermolecular forces).
Mass spectrometry
- Accurate mass and isotope determination. Analysis of
air-sensitive compounds using a glovebox - mass spectrometer combination. - ESI and APCI ionisation available, coupled to a time-of-flight (TOF)
analyser. LC-MS service also offered.
NMR (250/300/400/500 MHz, multinuclear facility)
- Determination of structure in solution.
In addition we have various other facilities.
Knowledge Transfer Account (KTA)
If you are a business and wish to work with our department, the KTA may be able to help. The KTA helps set up short and medium term (typically 6 months to 3 years) partnerships between our department and industry to fulfil specific research and specialist project goals.
Please visit our KTA website for more details and examples of what the KTA has done.
Taking on placement students
The university and our department has a long history of placing students on 12 month professional placements with a wide range of companies in various roles.
Our exceptional students, as well as gaining invaluable experience for themselves, can quickly become a member of your team - taking on the role and responsibilities of any normal junior employee.
Often, the knowledge and experience gained on a professional placement isn't lost after the 12 month period. It's not uncommon for professional placement students to maintain ties with their placement company - being employed as a full graduate after they have completed their degree with, of course, the ideal skills and familiarity to re-join your company with the minimum of training.
If you are interested in taking on placement students or finding out more information, please contact our professional placements officer, Helen Edwards - H.C.Edwards@bath.ac.uk.
Employer engagement
To compliment our professional placements programme and improve the employability of our students, we are interested in involving employers throughout a student's degree. This may range from a one-off hour long lecture to a regular programme of workshops to equip our students with the skills they need for professional life.
This, of course, is of great value to both the students and employers - giving you the opportunity to highlight your specific field to prospective future employees and provide to them the skills to excel should they join you.
If you would like to discuss these ideas further please contact our professional placements officer, Helen Edwards - H.C.Edwards@bath.ac.uk.
Sponsorships
There are many extremely talented undergraduate and postgraduate students who have every desire to continue their studies but are limited by a lack of funding for their fees and living expenses.
If you are able to assist these students please contact the Graduate School (fsci-gs-admissionsqueries@rt.bath.ac.uk) for postgraduate sponsorship.
Research
Research is what drives developments in our specialist fields - whilst industrial research and development accounts for a significant portion of progress, academic research also fills a unique role.
If you would like to find out more about the research our department is currently involved, please visit our reseach pages. If you have a specific research proposal in mind or would like to discuss the possibilities of funding research further please contact, Prof Chris Frost - C.G.Frost@bath.ac.uk.
