Research Software Engineering

We are a collaborative, researcher-focussed team that provides computational expertise and dedicated staff resources to research groups across all disciplines

Our role in research

"A Research Software Engineer (RSE) combines professional software engineering expertise with an intimate understanding of research." (The Society of Research Software Engineering)

As a Core Research Facility we provide dedicated software engineering and computing expertise to researchers across disciplines.

For example, we can work with researchers to:

  • identify suitable software solutions
  • design, develop, and test research software and tools
  • provide training to use High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities
  • advise on best practices for software and research data management
  • meet open source software requirements from journals and funders
  • increase impact of research data outputs by implementing Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) principles

Enabling, enhancing and communicating research

 Enabling research

  • Developing software
  • Interfacing with lab equipment
  • Using High Performance Computing

Enhancing existing work

  • Automating workflows
  • Refactoring and best practices for existing code
  • Scaling research on High Performance Computing

Communicating research

  • Data analysis and visualisation
  • Websites, GUIs, and dashboards
  • Open source software and data

Impact

  • Implementing FAIR principles
  • Promoting best practices
  • Enhancing collaboration
  • Engaging with external RSE networks

Where to start

We are happy to arrange an informal meeting to discuss your ideas and questions.

For example, we could:

  • discuss grant applications, including those requiring dedicated RSE resource for short- or long-term projects
  • provide specialist support on a one-off, short-term projects or issues (for example: with lab equipment and software interfaces)
  • discuss the feasibility of an idea providing advice and feedback
  • help with grant costing for RSE time, computing resources, and data storage requirements
  • provide training for use of High Performance Computing systems
  • review existing software to enhance performance on HPC systems
  • provide training for research students in software development best practices
  • discuss open source code and data requirements
  • advise on sustainable research computing practices

We welcome informal enquiries from University members.
