Discover Bath

Discover Bath is a free programme for Year 12 students where they can experience university study and find out about life at the University of Bath.

What is Discover Bath?

Discover Bath is a summer programme which aims to give prospective students a taste of first-year life and study at the University of Bath, together with the opportunity to gain an alternative offer (see details below).

Discover Bath is free-of-charge, including on-campus accommodation, free meals for the duration of your stay, a programme of academic sessions (lectures, seminars, workshops) and fun social activities. Your travel to the University can be reimbursed for reasonable travel within the UK.

In 2021 we hope to deliver this in-person on our University campus but if COVID-19 prohibits this then we will offer an online version of the same programme (delivered on the same dates) which students can complete in the comfort of their own home.

See dates below.

What will you do?

Discover Bath has a lot to offer

2 students talking together

As part of Discover Bath you will:

  • study a course in your Discover Bath subject area delivered by University of Bath lecturers, researchers and current students
  • find out what it’s like to study at the University of Bath
  • complete some pre-work assignments (via Microsoft Teams) to gain knowledge in your subject area, and equip you with university-level study skills
  • complete a subject-focused project/report (completed after the 4-day summer programme), with support provided by University staff
  • receive support on writing a personal statement, understanding the UCAS process, student finance, and much more
  • attend a 4-day residential course, staying on the University campus (3 nights) in real undergraduate student accommodation
  • join in with fun, social activities (led by current university students) to get a flavour of real student life
  • gain skills which will be essential for successful university study (e.g.research skills, independent study, teamwork)
  • network and make new, like-minded friends

On completion of Discover Bath, your project/report will be marked and if this meets the required standard and you subsequently apply to study at Bath and receive an offer, you will be eligible for an alternative offer (see below).

How you will benefit

Here's what some of this year's Discover Bath students said about the programme:

'I found the Discover Bath programme really helped to strengthen my journey to university. This programme was the first time I had learnt how to interpret, write and evaluate scientific reports which are, of course, very key skills at university. Discover Bath made me feel ready and confident to apply to university.' James – Discover Bath Biology

'Taking part in the Discover Bath Programme made me realise I could fit into university as I was able to understand the work given and guidance was always offered. As the project was based around the coronavirus, everything we were doing was extremely current and so, exciting to keep up with.' Sali – Discover Bath Psychology

'The Discover Bath Fast Track biology course was an amazing experience that enabled me to put myself into a biomedical researchers’ shoes for the summer. The process was exciting and I learned a lot about the process of drug discovery and laboratory work. I was given help through by supportive mentor and taught a variety of important skills. I had so much fun and believe it was an inspiring and valuable experience.' Amy – Discover Bath Fast Track Biology

Alternative offer

If you complete Discover Bath, write up your work as a report which achieves a B/2:1 or above, and subsequently apply to and receive an offer from Bath you will receive an alternative offer which is typically one grade below our standard typical offer. For example, for a course with a typical offer of AAA the alternative offer would be to achieve AAB plus a B in the Discover Bath project.

Our alternative offers are currently only available to students studying A levels or Cambridge Pre-Us. Read about limitations and exemptions to our alternative offers.
