Dr Liang Sun

BEng PhD

Dr Liang Sun is a Research Officer in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, working for the research project SMARTY: Supergen Marine Technology Challenge.

Liang joined the Department in January 2013. Previously he was a Research Fellow at the National University of Singapore (NUS) between 2009 and 2012, and Research Assistant at the University of Oxford between 2006 and 2009.

He obtained his PhD in Port, Coastal and Offshore Engineering from the Dalian University of Technology in 2009.

The main focus of Liang's research is numerical analysis of wave-structure interactions.

During his PhD study, Liang analysed the first and second-order wave diffraction/radiation problems for arbitrary single and multiple bodies by using self-coded program based on the Boundary Element Method. He also investigated offshore engineering and published several papers in Chinese or English.

In 2006, Liang attended the EU SAFE OFFLOAD project and analysed the interactions between waves and multiple floating bodies. He enhanced the existing codes for hydrodynamic analysis, making the packages more powerful and user-friendly. He also  identified and analysed unique wave behaviours.

Liang moved to the National University of Singapore (NUS) in August 2009. In his recent papers for offshore installations, Liang has investigated both hydrodynamic and mechanical interactions.

His research interests include:

  • Numerical analysis of wave-structure interactions
  • Parallel computing
  • Extreme waves modelling
