Graduate Research Scholarships & Teaching Assistant PhD Scholarships

Graduate Research Scholarships (GRS) and Teaching Assistant PhD Scholarships (TAPS) and are available for new students. Check if you're eligible for this award.

If you are applying for doctoral study in Management, you may be eligible for a Graduate Research Scholarship and, if you are interested in applying to Computer Science or Chemistry, you may be eligible for a Teaching Assistant PhD Scholarship.

Scholarship value

You could receive funding for up to four years. This includes:

  • Home tuition fees
  • Maintenance stipend equivalent to the UKRI standard Doctoral Stipend rate. Computer Science and Chemistry scholars will receive a maintenance uplift.
  • Training Support Fee of £1,000 (payable annually for Computer Science and Chemistry scholars and in years 2-4 for Management scholars).

Funding eligibility

Teaching Assistant PhD Scholarships (TAPS) in the Faculty of Science

TAPS Scholarships are open to Home students only.

Graduate Research Scholarships (GRS) in the School of Management

GRS Scholarships are open to both Home and International candidates.

International candidates should note that a scholarship does not cover UK Student visa costs, or the cost of the mandatory UK Immigration Health Surcharge. These costs can be considerable, so we ask all International applicants to check these costs before applying and ensure they would be willing and able to cover these from their personal funds.

In determining Home student status, we follow the UK government’s fee regulations and guidance from the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA).

Academic eligibility

To be eligible for this award you should have an excellent academic background and an exceptional scholarly vocation, including the desire and ability to support teaching in the broad subject area of your PhD.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you must meet the English language entry requirements for your chosen programme at the time of applying, and you must be able to demonstrate both oral and written fluency in the language.

Both the Graduate Research Scholarships (GRS) and Teaching Assistant PhD Scholarships (TAPS) are available for full-time study only and scholars are normally expected to commence their doctoral studies at the beginning of the academic year in September/October.

Scholars must be based at the University of Bath and to attend in person from the start of their programme.

Scholars are required to serve as a Teaching Assistants alongside their doctoral studies.

On completing the online application form:

  • in the ‘Funding Your Studies’ section, please select ‘Graduate Research Scholarship OR Teaching Assistant PhD Scholarship’ from one of the drop-down menus.
  • in the ‘Your PhD project’ section, you must quote the intended project title and the name of your intended Bath supervisor in the appropriate boxes.

Failure to complete the above steps could result in your application not being considered for this scholarship award.

Applications close on 27 February 2026 at 23:59 UK time (GMT).

Teaching Assistant PhD Scholarships (TAPS) in the Faculty of Science

Scholarships are allocated on a rolling basis depending on the availability of funds. Please enquire with your intended lead supervisor.
