mA*ths Online Programme
A programme to support year 12 students with A Level Maths
What is mA*ths online?
Are you a year 12 A-level Mathematics student considering studying a maths-related degree at university? Through this programme you could:
- Develop the skills you need to achieve an A* in A-level Mathematics
- Build your confidence to apply to universities that require an A* in Mathematics for your chosen subject
This initiative, supported by the Hg foundation, is intended to support students with the academic ability to achieve A/A* at A-level to reach their full academic potential in their Maths studies.
The programme is targeted at pupils from communities underrepresented in Higher Education. During the programme, successful applicants receive tailored support, including online mentoring and face-to-face masterclasses and workshops at the University of Bath. This initiative runs in collaboration with Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI).
What will you do?
24th January 2026: One day introductory masterclass
This in-person event will provide an opportunity to visit our campus and meet the mentors who will be working with you on the programme. Workshops will be run by University of Bath academics and students.
January to June 2026: Two 7-week Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
These online courses have been designed to fit with the A-level Mathematics curriculum in a structured series. Content is delivered in a variety of ways including videos, practice questions and assessments covering a range of methods and applications. You will also receive ongoing online mentoring from current University of Bath students.
June 2026: Celebration event and closing masterclass
This event gives you an opportunity to visit campus and celebrate completing the programme, while also engaging in further workshops to help support your maths skills alongside your A-level curriculum.

Who should apply?
mA*ths online is aimed at academically-able Year 12 students who meet our Widening Participation criteria and are considering applying to university to study a maths related degree.
To be considered for a place you will need to:
- have achieved at least a 6 in your Mathematics and Science GCSEs, and have completed at least 2 Science GCSEs (please note that we review academic attainment as part of our selection process, in the past most of our successful applicants have achieved at least 6 GCSEs graded 7-9 including Mathematics and Sciences)
- be capable of achieving an A grade in A-level Mathematics, even if you may not feel certain of this
- be willing to travel to the University of Bath up to two times a year on scheduled weekend dates
- be planning to apply for university courses with a large mathematical component
- meet one or more of our widening participation criteria

When applying you will need to:
- provide details of your current qualifications (e.g. A-Levels or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma) and previous qualifications (e.g. GCSEs)
- provide contact details for a parent/carer
- provide contact details of a teacher who can provide a reference
Application deadline 12 December 2025 After the deadline has passed we will review all the applications and let everyone know the outcome.
