My experience on the MSc in Sustainability and Management
The course (MSc in Sustainability and Management) prepared me for working as part of a team. A lot of our assignments were in groups, which wasn’t the case on my bachelor’s in Italy.
I also gained skills that I wouldn’t have been able to get anywhere else. This was especially true on the ‘Business ethics’ and ‘Theories of corporate responsibility’ units. When I was applying to universities, I couldn’t find another course with these subjects. The fact that Bath has been teaching them for so long is a testament to how forward thinking the University is.
How the careers team supported my ambitions
My experience was very positive. Everyone at the School of Management was incredibly supportive. From day one the Careers Team focused on helping us get jobs. I appreciated this because, as a student, I had a lot of time pressure and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after graduation yet. The continual support I got from the University really helped.
They showed us how to apply for graduate schemes and jobs, which was useful as an international student. Everything was completely different from what I was used to in Italy.
Living in Bath
The very first week was a bit of a shock, as I came from nine months of working in the United States. I had to get used to the Somerset accent! But it became normal very quickly. The fact that Bath is such an international university really helped. I also made some great friends while living there. I met my wife during the master’s degree, and seven or eight of my university friends were at my wedding.
What I did after graduation
I got my job offer the day I was discussing my final project as part of the master’s degree, which was great. So I went straight to work after the summer. I graduated in June and started a graduate scheme in August at this big market research company, Kantar. It was a very international environment in London. It was the perfect place for me to learn and grow. I progressed a lot there, and by the time I left six years later I was a director, managing a team of six.
Afterwards, I moved into the pharmaceutical sector and started working for AstraZeneca. It’s huge. A proper corporate environment. My year in Bath was important, because it’s that type of role we’re made to work towards.
My advice to MSc applicants
The School of Management at Bath is one of the best business schools in the UK. It shows when you’re there. You’re very well taken care of, which is the most important thing. Applicants shouldn’t look for the name of the university, but what the course offers and how life is there. That’s what your experience is going to be. It’s a fantastic school.
