Find funding for Doctoral research

You could be considered for a studentship or scholarship to help you study at Bath.

Studentships and scholarships

Depending on your area of study, you could be considered for different funding opportunities.

There are three main elements of funding for Doctoral Research:

  1. Tuition fees
  2. The cost of research, sometimes called the training support fund (TSF). This amount varies by discipline and project and should be discussed with your potential supervisor
  3. Stipend, which is to cover your living costs and personal expenses

Scholarships can provide funds for all or just some of these costs, so please ensure you understand what the scholarship is covering before applying or accepting.

When considering funding you should also consider any costs associated with moving to Bath, e.g. relocation expenses and, if you require a visa to study in the UK, visa fees and the immigration health surcharge (IHS). The majority of scholarships do not cover these costs.

If you are an international student, you should also note that, in order to be considered for the majority of our studentships, you must have met the English language requirement for the programme before the application deadline (unless otherwise stated). Please check the English language requirement webpage to ensure you meet requirements before you apply.

Alternative funding

You can look for funding from sources other than those offered by the University. Trusts and charities can make awards for fees, maintenance, or research costs to any student, regardless of subject or nationality.

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Online helps you explore alternative sources of funding. It contains a database of funding opportunities, comprehensive guidance, and tools to help you prepare a winning grant application.

The Guide is free for all University of Bath students and staff to use. If you are a prospective student and would like to access the site, you will need to request a PIN from Student Support.
