About the Commonwealth Split-Site Scholarship and Research at the University of Bath

The Commonwealth Split-Site Scholarship provides an opportunity for high-quality PhD students from eligible Commonwealth Countries to conduct 12 months of their research at the University of Bath.

You will need to find a suitable supervisor for your proposed research at the University of Bath and have their agreement to supervise your visit and research project. You can find a suitable supervisor on the research and staff pages for each department. You can also browse Pure, the University’s research portal, for profiles of individual academics as well as the research centres, institutes and units to which they belong.

How to apply

Application to the Commonwealth

Details, including eligibility criteria and application process for students are on the Commonwealth Split-Site Scholarship webpage. It is recommended that the information posted by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission be reviewed in the first instance, as the information below is supplementary and intended to assist applicants to the University of Bath. Both your home country supervisor and your proposed supervisor at Bath will need to provide supporting statements for your application.

Application to the University of Bath

You only need to submit an application to the University of Bath if you are successful in obtaining the scholarship. We will not be able to provide you with a link to the application form until you have received a positive decision from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission .

Once you have submitted your application to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, you should begin preparing your supporting documents for your application to the University of Bath, so that you are ready to submit this immediately if you are awarded the scholarship.

The following documents are required by the University of Bath:

  • A letter of support from the supervisor at your home institution, containing the following:
    • their name and the name of the institution;
    • confirmation that they are supervising you currently;
    • confirmation that you are currently studying for a PhD, and the name of the degree;
    • confirmation that they are happy for you to spend time visiting the University of Bath;
    • confirmation that the research in the UK forms part of, or is relevant to, the course studied at the Home institution;
  • A research proposal, detailing the research you intend to complete at University of Bath
  • Evidence of how you meet the University of Bath’s English language entry requirements. If you have previously completed a degree taught in English, please provide evidence of this. Otherwise, you will need to complete an English test.
  • A photo/scan of your passport photo page
  • Copies of any undergraduate and Masters degree certificates (with an English translation)

As soon as you receive a positive decision on your scholarship application, please contact us at dc-vps@bath.ac.uk to request a link to our online application. When you contact us, please include the following:

  • a copy of your notification of award from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission;
  • the name of your University of Bath supervisor and academic department;
  • attach all the documents listed above. Any delay in submitting your application to Bath could affect your start date if you are successful.
