A head shot of Abdallah
"Every student here is willing to help others."

Choosing to study at the School of Management

I chose to study Accounting and Finance at the School of Management because I've got a few friends who attended Bath and they found it amazing in terms of experience and education. The University is top 10 in the UK and top five for Accounting and Finance1. Those were the main drivers that attracted me to study here.

My learning experience

Over the past few years, my learning experience has been amazing. I have learned a lot, whether it was education or generally, like meeting people in student societies. The quality of education is very strong at the University. I’ve been very well supported.

Over the three years, every lecturer I’ve had was smart, unique and passionate about what they're doing. For my final year, all the units were optional. I chose units to make my course diverse in terms of learning experience and coursework.

There have been group work activities and problem-solving sessions before the exams. So we can help one another. Every student here is willing to help others. I've never encountered or seen anyone encounter bad experiences with classmates.

Life in the city of Bath

This year I’m living in Green Park House student accommodation, which is in the middle of the city. Everything is close by. The city of Bath is amazing. It’s small, so you can walk around and explore it in a few days. The people in the city are all friendly. It's a great community here.

I’m from Jordan and I would say Bath's pretty different in terms of culture and the diversity of the people you see. Bath is a student city, so you see people from every single country across the world. It’s different, but I was able to adapt quickly.

My placement experience

I did my placement at Lloyd's Banking Group at their London offices. The experience was amazing. It was great to have a full year of experience of corporate life and to contribute to the firm. I gained many transferable skills from the University that I used at work; and then from work to use back at university as well.

It was a positive experience and I would recommend it to anyone. The staff were always supportive from my first day until my last day. If I didn’t understand something, they were there to guide me through it and help me if I had any difficulties.

The support from the School Placements team was amazing. There were sessions on how to write a CV and cover letter, apply for jobs and prepare for interviews and assessment centres.

It's great to have 12 months’ worth of experience on my CV, especially from a great city like London, which is a financial hub for many major banks. Along with the previous internships that I've done, I would say that it's helped me prepare well for my career. I managed to secure a summer internship at Goldman Sachs directly after my placement at Lloyd’s. They have offered me a full-time position.

It's a role that is competitive to get into, so the placement definitely helped me to get that job. Working at Goldman Sachs has been one of my goals since I was 13 or 14, so I’m looking forward to it. For the next few years, I’m planning to be the best at what I do in my job. I'm also hoping to contribute more to my home country of Jordan later on, once I get the relative experience, to help it to become more prosperous.

If you’re thinking about studying at Bath, I would tell you to do it. It's a great city and a great university. The University helps you with your studies and your future and the community here is amazing.

Every lecturer I’ve had was smart, unique and passionate about what they're doing.
