From student to stand-out candidate: three ways I boosted my employability at Bath

BSc Business student Ella shares how she gained transferable skills through work placements, the Final Year Project and chairing a student society.

Choosing Bath was a no-brainer for me. I knew from Year 10 at school that I wanted to study Business at Bath. The course ranks so highly in the UK and has good placement opportunities and graduate outcomes.

Gaining real experience on my work placements

My first placement was in Southampton with an autonomous drone company called Windracers. The role was quite broad and I had a lot of responsibility, so the main thing I learned was resilience. I reported directly to the CEO and they provided lots of feedback. This helped me realise what mistakes I was making and decide how to improve.

One of the School Placement Officers came to see me, and we talked about how the role was going. She helped me understand what I liked about it and what I wanted to do for my second placement. She suggested a role at a management consultancy called Oliver Wyman. This meant I had a head start to research the company and connect with people to prepare for my application.

The placement was very competitive and it was quite surreal when I got it. I worked on Baker Street in London, which was cool. It felt like living somebody else’s life. I learned how to get stuck in right away, and how to network within a company. I loved my placement and I’m going back to Oliver Wyman for a graduate role next year.

Being a key part of the team for my Final Year Project

The Final Year Project is a semester-long unit where you work in groups and connect with a client based on an area of business that you're interested in. You act as consultants to help solve a real-world problem.

My group were matched with Naturbeads who wanted help with their marketing. We created a project plan and then delivered it across ten weeks. It was fun to take everything we’d learnt from the previous three years and apply it to the project.

We chose our roles in the team based on our different skill sets. My placement was in consulting, so I took on a more organisational role. My teammate with marketing experience did more of the creative work. Another with finance experience did the data analysis. Another had worked with influencers and used her contacts to do primary research. Being friends made it easier to work together, but we also learned to be open with each other and negotiate.

Naturbeads were a great client. They were clear on what they wanted us to achieve, but didn't put us under too much pressure. They treated us like real consultants. At the end, they said they wouldn't have known that we were still students as we were so professional.

Our marketing campaign involved making a video for them in Bath. It was so rewarding to see the impact we'd made. Finding your voice in a big group setting can be hard, but it’s a confidence boost when you work with a client and realise what you're saying is valuable to them.

The biggest thing I learned was how to rely on my teammates to get their parts of the project done. Trusting each other was important. We put our heart and soul into the project and it showed in both our grades and the output.

Launching and running a student society

I’m the Chair of the 93% Club at Bath. The Club is a national charity that supports state-educated students at university to find a community. I noticed that the 93% Club in Bristol was founded in 2018, but Bath didn’t have an equivalent one. When I started at Bath, I contacted somebody who’d tried to set it up previously but didn't get enough traction. We came together and launched the Club two years ago.

The 93% Club recognises that people who come from lower income backgrounds may not have their own network. So we provide that network by running things like employer events and socials, and offer help with CVs and cover letters.

Last year we had over 1,500 sign-ups! We've gained over 600 followers on Instagram and we have regulars who turn up to every event. It’s great to know that we're making an impact and to hear people say things like, “I'm so glad that the 93% Club exists.”

We get a lot of support from the Students' Union. The School of Management have sponsored us, and my Student Experience Officer is also very supportive. Recently we got invited to Parliament for the 93% Club Awards. I was nominated for President of the Year, and we all got an Impact Maker award. It was great to celebrate everyone.

My advice for prospective students

If you’re thinking about studying at Bath, I would say absolutely do it. It's been the best four years and I have no regrets. Visit Bath and get a feel for the atmosphere yourself. I felt at home here from the very first day.

Everyone on the Business course is very sociable. At the start, our lecturers would say, “look out for the person next to you, they could be a future CEO.” Now, I’ve made some of my best friends for life and built a professional network.
