Why we should care about middle managers in academia? What are the biggest challenges in their everyday work? How can we, as higher education researchers, move from describing these challenges to contributing actionable solutions?

Drawing on her programme of research on academic governance and academic careers, Dr Olga Ryazanova will explore how individual academics, university leaders, and middle-level leaders themselves see middle management roles.

This research perspective will inform the discussion of the pathways through which higher education researchers can make a difference to addressing the current challenges at the middle management level.

The seminar will focus on bridging the “research-research gap” – disconnect between the research evidence we produce and the evidence we use to govern our academic workplaces - by purposeful engagement with decision-makers at university and policymaking levels.
