Guide for doctoral students on what support and training is available to develop entrepreneurship

Find courses, workshops, sources of support and other information to help you bridge the gap between research, commercial application and business creation.

“These courses provide, in a short series of targeted sessions, the basic toolkit one needs to successfully start and grow a business. Being a PhD currently developing cutting-edge technology, I find it an excellent complement to my core degree. It’s a pity that in places such as universities, where ideas constantly brew, many of them get nowhere but on a piece of paper, simply because of the students’ lack of exposure into these entrepreneurship circles.”

About the masterclasses

There are well-known gaps that must be crossed to successfully commercialise an idea or invention and take it to market. During these masterclasses you will learn what these gaps are, why they exist, where you could fall and how you can climb back out of them. They will help you to investigate, analyse and reflect on the socio- and economic potentials of your idea or scientific discovery in terms of 'Problem', 'Solution' and 'Opportunity' and we shall do this through a systematic and practical hands on approach.

The masterclasses will give you the confidence to articulate comprehensive evidence-backed answers to the following questions in relation to commercialisation of any discovery, invention, or idea that either you own or are responsible for.

  • What is the product or service?
  • Who will buy it?
  • Why will they buy it?
  • Why will they buy it now?
  • Why will they buy that product or service?
  • Where do buyers come from?
  • Who is already buying it?
  • Who is already selling it?
  • How will they buy it?
  • What resources are needed?

The masterclasses will be delivered by Dr Ali Hadavizadeh of Acorn Biz Solutions.
