The SAMBa PhD delivers research at the interface of applied mathematics, numerical analysis, probability and statistics.

An Integrated PhD from the Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics (SAMBa) provides training in a broad range of mathematical, computational and statistical skills, as well as beneficial collaboration with industry, government and applied sciences throughout the course.

Since graduating, alumni are now working successfully in academia and industry.

Programme structure

Most students complete this programme in 4 years. You cannot take less than 2 years to finish your research and the maximum time you are allowed is normally 4 years.


You will start this programme in September.

Research content

SAMBa supports multidisciplinary mathematical PhD research, often in collaboration with external partners. We host a diverse cohort of researchers in an inclusive environment who explore mathematical modelling, inspired by real world phenomena, both in abstraction and incorporating data. This research spectrum includes rapidly developing areas of mathematical sciences including, machine learning, uncertainty quantification, optimisation, high-dimensional statistics and numerical stochastic modelling.

Postgraduate researchers undertake a four-year integrated programme of research in a world-class environment with opportunities to work flexibly across disciplines. They are trained to become fearless in formulating large-scale challenges in the language of statistical applied mathematics and become leading problem solvers.

Students can either pursue an industry co-designed PhD project, or a project formulated with an academic supervisor during the training phase.

Assessment description

The taught elements of the initial training phase include units that are assessed using coursework and examinations (both oral and written). Students are required to reach a pass mark of 60% to progress onto their research phase.

During the research phase, students carry out supervised research in their chosen subject which must then be written up as a substantial thesis. The confirmation of the PhD programme is subject to students passing an assessment process, which normally involves submission of written work and an oral examination. This usually takes place 12 months after the start of the research phase.

The final stage of the PhD is submission of the thesis and the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a Board of Examiners.

Entry requirements


Academic requirements

First or upper second-class honours degree, or equivalent in an appropriate subject.

English Language requirements

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in all components
  • The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 62 with no less than 59 in any element
  • TOEFL IBT: 90 overall with a minimum 21 in all 4 components

You will need to get your English language qualification within 24 months prior to starting your course.

If you need to improve your English language skills before starting your studies, you may be able to take a pre-sessional course to reach the required level.

Two references are required. At least one of these should be an academic reference from the most recent place of study.
