LGBTQ+ Connect

A monthly support group for students who are questioning or exploring their LGBTQ+ identity.

LGBTQ+ Connect is a monthly peer support group for students who identify as LGBTQ+, are questioning their identity, or simply want a safe space to connect with others on a similar journey.

Whether you're exploring your sexuality or gender identity, thinking about coming out, or just looking to feel more comfortable in yourself - you're welcome here.

You might be:

  • questioning your sexuality or gender identity
  • wanting to feel more comfortable and confident in yourself
  • working out how to come out to certain people for the first time, or in a new setting
  • looking for community and understanding

There is no single “right” answer to any of these experiences and you don’t need to have it all figured out to join. We hope that by creating a space to come together, share experiences, and just be, you’ll feel accepted, affirmed, and supported in your journey, wherever you are right now.

The group is facilitated by:

  • Jet Bennett (he/him) – Wellbeing and Mental Health Practitioner
  • Grace Rider (they/them) – Student Support Advisor

Both facilitators are part of the LGBTQ+ community and are experienced in creating inclusive, confidential spaces for reflection, support, and connection.

What to expect?

In this relaxed space, you can expect connection, support, and acceptance.

The group meets monthly on campus, in a private and safe space with access to gender-neutral toilets. The space also has a separate accessible entrance (via library card access). If you require use of the accessible entrance or have any other accessibility needs, please let us know in advance so we can make arrangements.

To protect attendees’ privacy, the time and location will only be shared with students who have agreed to the group’s confidentiality guidelines.

The group offers a relaxed, confidential space where you can:

  • meet other LGBTQ+ and questioning students
  • share experiences (only if you want to)
  • feel heard and accepted
  • build confidence in your identity, at your own pace

You do not need to be ‘out’ or have a label for your identity to attend. There is no expectation to share personal information - just bring yourself, as you are.

We recognise that:

  • coming out is a personal and often ongoing process
  • it’s okay not to have everything figured out
  • your identity might be fluid and that’s valid too
  • you deserve community and support, wherever you’re at
